Ufabulum
By Squarepusher
The Story
Released on May 14, 2012, Ufabulum marked a distinct shift in Squarepusher’s approach, moving away from the prominent live bass playing that defined much of his earlier work and focusing instead on digital synthesis and programmed sound design. Created by Tom Jenkinson, the album emphasizes precision, texture, and complex electronic sequencing, reflecting a deliberate return to purely synthesized composition.
The production centers on sharp, digitally generated tones, rapid rhythmic patterns, and intricate layering. Rather than blending acoustic and electronic elements, Ufabulum presents a more controlled and abstract sound, built entirely from synthesized sources. This approach results in a consistent sonic palette characterized by clean edges, mechanical rhythms, and highly detailed structures.
4001 opens the album with a dense, immersive start that sets the tone for the record’s synthetic world. Unreal Square and Stadium Ice continue with fast, shifting rhythms and tightly organized textures, while Energy Wizard pushes the album’s intensity further through abrupt changes and digital complexity. Red in Blue and The Metallurgist add contrast, showing how Jenkinson balances aggression with more measured melodic movement.
Drax 2 and Dark Steering expand the album’s scale with longer forms and more gradual development, allowing the sound design to unfold in a less compressed way. 303 Scopem Hard returns to a sharper rhythmic focus, and Ecstatic Shock closes the record with a final burst of layered sequencing and controlled chaos.
Ufabulum emphasizes digital synthesis, rhythmic precision, and structured complexity. By stripping away the more organic instrumental identity associated with earlier Squarepusher work, Tom Jenkinson created an album that feels colder, tighter, and more system-driven, while still retaining the restless technical energy that defines his music.
